Our Mandate
The Lands Branch will take its mandate from the Lands and Resources Act.
Our Services
The Lands Branch provides a wide range of administrative and spatial decision support services to the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council and Ta'an Kwäch'än citizens.
Our expertise lies in land and resources, spatial analysis and modelling, protected area strategies, land use planning, land and water management planning, non-renewable management planning and land tenure allocations. Our services include
- Open and accountable decision-making
- Sustainable development—working with the government branches of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council
and withTa'an Kwäch'än citizens to understand land and resource values and opportunities - Land policies, settlement land use and sustainable resource management plans
- Managing and providing information pertaining to the natural resource sector
- Reviewing and monitoring land use applications in the traditional territory
of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council and on its settlement lands
The Settlement Lands
of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council
Pursuant to the Final Agreement, the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council has retained
- 5 rural blocks for a total of 405 sq km Category "A" settlement lands
- 17 rural blocks for a total of 365 sq km Category "B" settlement lands
- 105 rural site specific selections for a total of 7 sq km
- 47 community site specific selections for a total of 19 sq km
- a total of 796 sq km settlement lands
- 1.3 sq km Lake Laberge Indian Reserve No. 1 with specific provisions
outlined in section 29, Retained Reserves, of the the Ta'an Kwäch'än

On Category "A" settlement land the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council owns both the surface and sub-surface resources. On Fee Simple and Category "B" settlement lands the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council owns the surface but not the sub-surface resources.
The Ta'an Kwäch'än Council has retained its aboriginal rights and title on settlement lands to the extent that they are consistent with the Final Agreement, and ceded, released and surrendered its aboriginal claims, rights, title and interests on non-settlement lands only.
Under Part III, Ta'an Kwäch'än Council Legislation, of the Self-Government Agreement, section 13.3 specifically sets out the powers of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council to enact laws of a local or private nature on its settlement lands and, under section 14, in regard to taxation.
